A lost clear aligner is frustrating, but it does not have to derail treatment. Contact your care team as soon as possible, tell them which tray and day you were on, and follow their instructions about wearing a previous tray, moving forward, or ordering a replacement.
The first five steps
- Check the case, bathroom, bedding, bags, and the place you last ate.
- Do not leave your teeth without a tray while you wait for days.
- Message or call the care team promptly.
- Report the tray number, how long you wore it, and whether the previous and next trays are available.
- Send photos if a tray is cracked, distorted, or no longer fitting.
Should you wear the previous or next tray?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. If you had only just started the missing tray, the previous tray may be the safer temporary option. If you were near the scheduled change and the next tray seats properly, the clinician may advise moving forward. Only your treating team knows the planned movement and your recent tracking.
Do not force a next tray that will not seat. Do not wear two trays at once or try to accelerate the schedule later to make up for lost time.
What to do with a cracked or warped aligner
A tiny superficial mark is different from a split, sharp edge, or distorted tray. Stop wearing an appliance that is painful, badly damaged, or does not fit. Heat can warp plastic, so never try to repair it with hot water.
Keep the damaged tray and its packaging until your care team responds. The tray number and failure pattern may help them decide what comes next.
Will you need a replacement?
A replacement may be needed when the missing stage is important for tracking or when neither adjacent tray is appropriate. Manufacturing and shipping time varies. Ask whether temporary wear of another tray is needed to hold the current position.
How to avoid losing another tray
- Use the same hard case every time the trays leave your mouth.
- Never wrap them in a napkin or place them on a food tray.
- Keep the case away from pets and heat.
- Save the most recent previous tray unless your care team says otherwise.
- Label travel cases with a phone number that does not reveal medical information.
When the problem is urgent
Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, trouble breathing or swallowing, a knocked-out permanent tooth, or major facial trauma. For a lost or broken aligner without those symptoms, contact the dental team promptly but stay calm; most situations can be managed with a clear temporary plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sleep without an aligner after losing it?
Do not decide to go without treatment for an extended period. Contact your care team and ask which available tray should hold the teeth while the situation is resolved.
What if I accidentally threw my aligner away?
Treat it like any lost tray: contact the team, identify the stage and day, and keep your previous and next trays available for their instructions.
Can I wear an aligner my pet chewed?
No. A chewed tray may be contaminated, sharp, cracked, or distorted. Store it for identification, but do not wear it unless the care team has assessed the situation.
