Clear aligner consultation checklist: questions to ask before treatment

Before choosing clear aligners, leave the consultation with a written account of who will provide your care, what the treatment aims to do, which records and visits are required, and what the complete fee includes. Use this checklist to compare those answers across providers, even when their package names differ.

Start with a professional assessment. In the U.S., clear aligners are prescription devices. An online questionnaire or digital preview does not replace a dental examination or establish that a particular treatment is suitable. This article provides appointment and quote organization, not individual clinical advice.

What to take to a clear aligner consultation

Write down the concern you want to address and the result you hope for. Note any previous orthodontic treatment, current retainer, restorations and recent dental care. Ask the practice what records it wants you to bring and how it wants them supplied; avoid paying for duplicate records before checking what can be used.

Keep a list of your practical constraints too: appointment travel, work or study hours, budget and the way you prefer to receive support. These details make it easier to judge whether the proposed care pathway fits your life. They do not determine clinical suitability.

1. Who is responsible for your treatment?

Ask for the name, professional role and registration jurisdiction of the prescribing dentist or orthodontist. Find out who reviews your progress and how to contact that professional if a concern needs clinical attention. A support coordinator and a prescribing clinician have different responsibilities.

  • Who performs the initial assessment and approves the prescription?
  • Who checks progress, and what is the expected review schedule?
  • How are questions passed from customer support to the clinician?
  • Where would an in-person examination or adjustment take place if needed?

The FDA describes professional supervision and periodic in-person review as important safeguards. A scan-centre appointment should be explained in terms of what it includes; do not assume every scan appointment includes a full dental examination.

2. What will the proposed plan try to achieve?

Ask the clinician to explain the treatment objective in plain language and to distinguish the planned result from a guaranteed outcome. Request an explanation of any concern that falls outside the proposal. If different providers recommend different approaches, ask each to explain the reason using your records.

  • What are the main goals, and how will progress toward them be assessed?
  • Are one or both arches being treated, and why?
  • Are attachments, IPR or elastics proposed, and where would that work be performed?
  • What other options should I consider for this particular concern?

Our single-arch guide and attachments explainer can help you prepare follow-up questions. Your clinician should explain their relevance to your own plan.

3. Which records and visits are included?

Ask for a list of the records required before approval and the appointments expected during treatment. Find out which services are included in the quoted package, which are arranged elsewhere, and who pays if records need repeating. Keep the distinction between a record-collection service and a clinical examination clear.

For remote care, ask how an examination, any requested imaging, progress reviews and urgent in-person assessment are arranged. Confirm the actual locations and charges rather than relying on a general promise of convenient care. Read our scan and impression comparison for record-appointment questions.

4. Compare the complete written fee

A monthly payment and a starting price answer different questions. Ask for the total cash price, then separately ask for any financing term, deposit, interest or fees and total amount payable. Record the date and expiry of an offer so two quotes can be compared fairly.

Mark an unanswered item “confirm” rather than treating it as free or unavailable. Keep USD and AUD quotes separate. Our brand comparison explains the difference between a practice-set fee and a published package offer; the cost guide covers common quote components.

5. What happens if more trays are proposed?

Ask the provider to define its refinement allowance: additional rounds or tray limits, the deadline, new records and any related visit or shipping fees. Find out what happens when an allowance expires or the clinician recommends a different approach. “Included refinements” needs enough detail to compare one proposal with another.

Ask about the end of active treatment at the same time. Record who arranges final retainers, what is included, when they should arrive and how replacements are charged. Keep the refinement checklist and retainer guide with your quote.

Before you approve or pay

Keep copies of the written treatment proposal, fee schedule, monitoring arrangements and cancellation terms. Identify the point at which fabrication or shipping changes the refund terms, and ask how any separately charged records or impression kit are treated. Resolve differences between a headline offer and the detailed policy before proceeding.

For Hello My Teeth, use the current plans page and detailed guarantee terms, and ask the care team to confirm what applies to your proposed plan. The initial candidacy check requests contact details for results and next steps; clinical approval requires professional review.

For Australian research, use our separate Australian brand and cost comparison. Australian provider enquiries should follow the clearly labelled provider links rather than HMT's U.S. treatment pathway.

Frequently asked questions

Does a free scan mean the consultation is free?

Ask what the advertised scan includes and whether an examination, other records or a treatment-planning fee is separate. Keep the written answer with the offer.

Can I compare quotes without choosing a brand first?

Yes. Start by comparing the clinical proposal, responsible provider, records, appointments and complete fee. Then compare the system and package proposed for that scope.

What if the quote leaves an item unclear?

Ask the provider to clarify it in writing. Do not assume that unspecified visits, retainers or additional aligners are included.
