Bite relationship

Overbite and deep bite.
Understand your options.

Some overlap is normal. A deep bite needs assessment of how the teeth meet and whether they contact the gums or wear unevenly.

Understanding overbite and deep bite

Overbite is the vertical overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth when the back teeth are together. A deep bite describes excessive overlap. It is different from overjet, which measures how far the upper front teeth project forward.

An orthodontic assessment considers the overlap together with tooth wear, gum contact and jaw relationships. A front-view photo does not reveal everything about the bite or which movements would be appropriate.

Clear aligner treatment

When aligners may help

Clear aligners may form part of a professional deep-bite treatment plan. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment can involve controlled vertical movement, changes to tooth inclination and additional features or attachments. The approach is individual rather than a standard set of trays for every deep bite.

Where treatment has limits

A deep bite involving gum trauma, complex movements or a substantial skeletal discrepancy needs in-person assessment. Comprehensive aligner treatment offered by an orthodontist is not the same as eligibility for a remote service.

A professional assessment comes first

Plan for your whole smile

Before recommending movement, a dental professional needs to assess your teeth, gums, bite and relevant dental history. Records may include photographs, scans or impressions and X-rays when clinically indicated. Any active decay or gum disease needs appropriate care first.

Aligners used in comprehensive orthodontics may involve attachments, elastics, space-management procedures or regular office visits. These options are not necessarily part of a remote aligner service. Hello My Teeth eligibility must be confirmed individually; inclusion in this guide does not mean every case is accepted.

Ask your clinician

  • Is my overlap within a normal range or does it need correction?
  • Are my front teeth contacting soft tissue or showing wear?
  • What in-person procedures or monitoring would be required?

Time, cost and follow-up

Ask for a written estimate based on your diagnosis, including the wear schedule, monitoring, possible refinements and retainers. The condition name alone cannot predict treatment time or price. See current plans and pricing and confirm what your recommended plan includes.

Your questions, answered

Overbite and deep bite and clear aligners

Is overbite the same as protruding teeth?

No. Overbite is vertical overlap. Protrusion or increased overjet is a horizontal relationship; both can occur together.

Can every deep bite be treated from home?

No. The cause and required movements determine the level of care. A clinician may recommend comprehensive in-person treatment.

Will fixing my overbite treat jaw pain?

Do not assume that it will. Jaw pain has several possible causes and requires its own assessment; orthodontic treatment should not be presented as a guaranteed cure.

Your next step

A plan starts with
understanding your smile.

An online questionnaire is a starting point. A dental professional must confirm your oral health, diagnosis and treatment suitability.
