Open bite.
Understand your options.
An open bite needs more than a plan to close the visible space. Its cause and long-term stability matter too.

Understanding open bite
An anterior open bite leaves a vertical space between the upper and lower front teeth while the back teeth meet. A posterior open bite affects contacts farther back. The model illustrates the anterior pattern.
Tooth position, growth, habits and skeletal relationships can influence an open bite. The cause should be investigated rather than inferred from appearance. A clinician will also consider which teeth need to move and how the bite functions.
When aligners may help
Clear aligners may be used for selected open-bite cases within comprehensive treatment. Different cases need different strategies; closing the opening may involve changes beyond the front teeth. Additional procedures, attachments or specialist monitoring can be necessary.
Where treatment has limits
A marked skeletal open bite or persistent contributing factor can make treatment and retention more demanding. New bite changes during treatment should be reported to the treating clinician rather than managed by changing the wear schedule yourself.
Plan for your whole smile
Before recommending movement, a dental professional needs to assess your teeth, gums, bite and relevant dental history. Records may include photographs, scans or impressions and X-rays when clinically indicated. Any active decay or gum disease needs appropriate care first.
Aligners used in comprehensive orthodontics may involve attachments, elastics, space-management procedures or regular office visits. These options are not necessarily part of a remote aligner service. Hello My Teeth eligibility must be confirmed individually; inclusion in this guide does not mean every case is accepted.
Ask your clinician
- What is contributing to the open bite?
- Which teeth need to move, and how will contact be checked?
- What is the retention plan and risk of the bite reopening?
Time, cost and follow-up
Ask for a written estimate based on your diagnosis, including the wear schedule, monitoring, possible refinements and retainers. The condition name alone cannot predict treatment time or price. See current plans and pricing and confirm what your recommended plan includes.
Open bite and clear aligners
Can aligners close an anterior open bite?
They can be considered in selected cases, but suitability and the care setting depend on the diagnosis. A visible front gap does not reveal the full treatment needs.
Is open bite the same as gaps between teeth?
No. Open bite describes missing contact between upper and lower teeth. Spacing describes a gap between neighboring teeth in the same arch.
Can an open bite return after treatment?
It can. Your clinician should discuss contributing factors, retention and follow-up as part of the plan.
