Understanding overjet and protruding front teeth
Overjet describes the horizontal distance between the upper and lower front teeth. Increased overjet means the upper front teeth are positioned farther forward relative to the lower teeth. It can occur alongside crowding, spacing or a deep bite.
The appearance may relate to tooth inclination, the relationship between the jaws or a combination. Your clinician needs to consider your profile, bite, growth status and dental records before recommending a correction strategy.
When aligners may help
Aligners may be used for selected dental overjet cases within a clinician-led plan. Movement may need to be coordinated across both arches, and attachments or elastics can be required. Your prescribed plan should explain which part of the problem can be addressed through tooth movement.
Where treatment has limits
A substantial jaw-size or jaw-position difference may require specialist treatment beyond trays alone. In growing patients, assessment and treatment options differ from those for adults. Prominent teeth should not be pushed backward without considering space and support.
Plan for your whole smile
Before recommending movement, a dental professional needs to assess your teeth, gums, bite and relevant dental history. Records may include photographs, scans or impressions and X-rays when clinically indicated. Any active decay or gum disease needs appropriate care first.
Aligners used in comprehensive orthodontics may involve attachments, elastics, space-management procedures or regular office visits. These options are not necessarily part of a remote aligner service. Hello My Teeth eligibility must be confirmed individually; inclusion in this guide does not mean every case is accepted.
Ask your clinician
- Is my overjet mainly dental, skeletal or a combination?
- Will both arches need treatment?
- Would elastics, attachments or specialist care be part of the plan?
Time, cost and follow-up
Ask for a written estimate based on your diagnosis, including the wear schedule, monitoring, possible refinements and retainers. The condition name alone cannot predict treatment time or price. See current plans and pricing and confirm what your recommended plan includes.
Overjet and protruding front teeth and clear aligners
What is the difference between overjet and overbite?
Overjet is horizontal projection; overbite is vertical overlap. A person can have increased amounts of both.
Can aligners move protruding front teeth backward?
They may be able to make selected movements when there is a suitable plan and adequate space. The correct approach depends on the overall bite.
Can treatment change my jaw position?
Adult tooth movement does not by itself correct every underlying jaw discrepancy. Ask an orthodontist which dental changes are feasible and whether other care is needed.
