Tablet soak

15-minute soak
Manufacturer directions

Best for a measured soak

Retainer Brite Cleaning Tablets

A practical shortlist option for a provider-approved soaking routine. The manufacturer lists removable retainers and aligners among its intended uses.

Best for: People who prefer a premeasured tablet and can set aside soaking time.

Pros

  • One tablet per fresh solution.
  • No powered cleaning device required.

Cons / watch-outs

  • Contains persulfates; unsuitable for people allergic to them.
  • Needs a container and a timed soak.

Label check: Use warm, not hot, water and rinse thoroughly. Do not soak wire appliances beyond 15 minutes. Never mix cleaners or reuse the solution. [1]

Crystal soak

Best for an Invisalign-branded routine

Invisalign Cleaning Crystals

The original Cleaning Crystals use single-use packets mixed with water. This comparison covers the original product, not Cleaning Crystals+.

Best for: Invisalign wearers who want the original branded cleaning system and whose provider agrees.

Pros

  • Pre-portioned packet for each use.
  • Clear manufacturer mixing and rinsing directions.

Cons / watch-outs

  • Requires soaking time and a cleaning container.
  • Single-use packets create an ongoing replenishment need.

Label check: The label calls for warm, not hot, water, agitation when mixing and after soaking, then thorough rinsing. Follow your exact pack directions. [2]

Brush-on foam

90 seconds of brushing
Manufacturer directions

Best for a hands-on routine

Polident ProGuard Retainer Foam Cleanser

This foam offers a different routine from tablets. Polident lists aligners and clear or wired retainers among the appliances it is designed for, subject to professional suitability advice.

Best for: People who prefer brushing to a soak and have approval to use a soft brush on their appliance.

Pros

  • No soaking container needed.
  • A short, defined brushing step.

Cons / watch-outs

  • Requires a soft brush and hands-on cleaning.
  • Contains mint oil; check ingredients if you have sensitivities.

Label check: Remove the appliance, shake the bottle, apply two full pumps (adjust as needed), brush with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly before reinserting. [3]

Before you choose

Compatibility comes first.

01 / Check the appliance

Ask your provider about your exact aligner or retainer material, including any wire or acrylic parts. A cleaner’s general appliance claim is not a guarantee for your device.

02 / Match your routine

Decide whether you can reliably time a soak or prefer hands-on brushing. Check the space, water, container and brush you will need at home or while away.

03 / Read the ingredients

Review the current package for allergens and sensitivities. Do not treat a different fragrance or product name as proof that a cleaner is suitable for you.

04 / Compare real costs

When prices are available, compare delivered cost per labeled use, including refills. A larger pack or a shorter cleaning step does not establish better value or cleaning performance.

For daily care and troubleshooting, read how to clean clear aligners. For long-term maintenance, see retainers after treatment. Packing a cleaner? Use our traveling with clear aligners guide.

A cleaner is not a repair.

Heat and abrasive toothpaste can damage retainers. Persistent odor, cracks, irritation or a change in fit need your dental provider’s attention. Cleaning does not replace brushing, flossing or dental care. [4]

How we chose

Our research & testing criteria.

This is a desk-researched guide, not a hands-on product test. We checked manufacturer directions on September 15, 2026 and consulted orthodontic care guidance. We selected three different cleaning formats with published instructions, then compared these criteria:

  1. Intended use: whether the manufacturer identifies removable aligners or retainers.
  2. Routine: timing, preparation, rinsing and equipment required.
  3. Limitations: ingredient warnings, brushing requirements and material restrictions.
  4. Practical fit: whether the routine suits someone who prefers a soak or active brushing.
  5. Evidence quality: distinguish label claims from independently demonstrated outcomes.

Our “best for” labels are editorial judgments about convenience and intended use. We did not verify stain removal, odor reduction, microbial effects, long-term material safety, customer ratings, current prices or availability. We have not tested every cleaner on the market. No star ratings, performance scores or clinical superiority claims are assigned.

For a future hands-on review: record exact products and appliance materials, follow each label, document baseline and post-cleaning appearance under consistent lighting, assess handling and residue, and calculate cost per use. Claims about microorganisms or material safety would need appropriate laboratory evidence. Those tests have not been performed for this guide.

Good questions

Cleaner FAQs.

What is the best cleaner for clear aligners and retainers?

The best fit depends on your appliance material, ingredients you need to avoid and the routine you can follow. Use a product your provider approves. This shortlist compares formats and label directions; it does not establish a clinical winner.

Can I use the same cleaner for aligners and retainers?

Only when both the cleaner label and your appliance provider permit it. Clear plastic, acrylic and wire components can have different care requirements. A general claim about removable appliances is not approval for every brand or material.

Are these products tested by Hello My Teeth?

No. This is a desk-researched comparison of manufacturer instructions and dental care guidance. We have not performed hands-on, laboratory or long-term material testing, and do not assign performance scores.

Can I soak a retainer overnight?

Do not extend a soak beyond the instructions for your exact cleaner and appliance. Longer is not automatically better. Set a timer and follow the rinsing directions.

Can I use toothpaste or hot water instead?

Hot water can distort a retainer, and abrasive toothpaste can scratch it. Use your provider’s recommended cleaning method. Toothpaste intended for your teeth is not automatically suitable for clear plastic.

Do I need an ultrasonic cleaner too?

An ultrasonic device is optional, not a prerequisite for comparing these cleaners. Ask your provider whether a device is suitable for your appliance, and follow both sets of instructions before combining a device with a cleaning solution. We did not evaluate ultrasonic devices here.
