Midline misalignment.

A shifted dental center line can have several explanations. Understanding the cause matters more than trying to line up two points in a photograph.

Understanding midline misalignment
The dental midline is usually assessed at the junction between the central incisors. The upper and lower midlines may not coincide with one another, or a dental midline may differ from the facial midline. Small differences are not automatically a reason for treatment.
Uneven spacing, crowding, missing teeth and a functional jaw shift can affect the apparent center line. A photo can also be misleading when the head is turned. Professional assessment considers the bite and face together.
When aligners may help
Selected dental midline discrepancies may be addressed as part of aligner treatment. Correcting the center line can require space management and coordinated movements across the arches rather than shifting only the two front teeth.
Where treatment has limits
A discrepancy related to skeletal asymmetry, missing teeth or a jaw shift may need specialist or restorative input. The clinician should explain the achievable degree of correction and whether treatment is justified by functional or personal goals.
Plan for your whole smile
Before recommending movement, a dental professional needs to assess your teeth, gums, bite and relevant dental history. Records may include photographs, scans or impressions and X-rays when clinically indicated. Any active decay or gum disease needs appropriate care first.
Aligners used in comprehensive orthodontics may involve attachments, elastics, space-management procedures or regular office visits. These options are not necessarily part of a remote aligner service. Hello My Teeth eligibility must be confirmed individually; inclusion in this guide does not mean every case is accepted.
Ask your clinician
- Is the difference dental, skeletal or related to a closing shift?
- Does the midline concern affect my function or only appearance?
- Which movements would be needed, and what correction is realistic?
Time, cost and follow-up
Ask for a written estimate based on your diagnosis, including the wear schedule, monitoring, possible refinements and retainers. The condition name alone cannot predict treatment time or price. See current plans and pricing and confirm what your recommended plan includes.
Midline misalignment and clear aligners
Do my upper and lower midlines have to match perfectly?
Not every small difference requires treatment. Discuss the significance of your finding with a clinician rather than judging it from a selfie.
Can aligners correct a shifted midline?
They may be suitable for selected dental discrepancies. The cause, available space and required movements determine the plan.
Why might a midline correction involve other teeth?
Space and contact relationships across the arch influence where the front teeth can move. A stable plan may need coordinated movement beyond the visible center line.
